Glasgow airport to the city

Into the city by the Glasgow Airport Express bus.

Glasgow is served by two airports with very different transfer options: Glasgow Airport (GLA), close to the city and reliant on a dedicated express bus since it has no rail link of its own, and Glasgow Prestwick (PIK), used mainly by budget carriers, which sits some way south but has its own train station. Knowing which one you're flying into changes your plan considerably.

From Glasgow Airport (GLA): the Glasgow Airport Express 500

Glasgow Airport has no direct rail connection, which surprises some visitors given the city's excellent rail network — a rail link to Paisley has long been discussed but has not been built. In its place, the Glasgow Airport Express (service 500), run by First Bus/McGill's, is the main way into the centre and works well.

Journey time and frequency

The 500 runs to Buchanan Bus Station in the city centre, with a stop near Glasgow Central rail station en route, in around 20–25 minutes under normal traffic. Buses run very frequently — every 10 minutes or so through the day, tapering to roughly every 20–30 minutes early and late — making it a genuinely turn-up-and-go service rather than one that needs advance planning.

Buying tickets

Tickets can be bought on board with a contactless card, via the operator's app, or at kiosks in the terminal. Fares are moderate and a return ticket typically costs less than two singles bought separately, worth considering if you know you'll be using the same service on departure.

Taxi from Glasgow Airport

Taxis are available directly outside the terminal and are a reasonable option for groups or if you're arriving with a lot of luggage. The journey into the city centre takes around 15–25 minutes depending on traffic, and fares are metered — expect a fare noticeably higher than the bus but still moderate by the standards of major-city airport taxis. Ride-hailing apps also operate in Glasgow and can work out similarly priced to a taxi rank fare.

From Prestwick Airport (PIK): the train

Some budget airlines, notably Ryanair, use Glasgow Prestwick Airport, around 30 miles south-west of the city on the Ayrshire coast — a meaningfully different transfer to plan for than Glasgow Airport itself.

Prestwick Airport railway station

Prestwick's great advantage is a railway station connected directly to the terminal by a short covered walkway — genuinely one of the most convenient airport-to-train links in the UK. Trains run to Glasgow Central in around 45–50 minutes, with services roughly every 30 minutes for much of the day, operated by ScotRail. Many airlines using Prestwick include a rail ticket into Glasgow as part of the airfare — check your booking, as this can mean the transfer is already paid for.

Taxi and bus from Prestwick

A taxi from Prestwick to central Glasgow takes around 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic and costs considerably more than the train, given the distance. Local buses connect Prestwick town and Ayr but are not a practical way to reach Glasgow itself — the train is the clear choice for onward travel to the city.

Getting around once you're in the city

Glasgow's city centre is compact and walkable once you arrive at Buchanan Bus Station or Glasgow Central, but for onward travel around the wider city, the Glasgow Subway — a small circular underground line nicknamed the "Clockwork Orange" — connects the West End, city centre and south side. See our guide to the Glasgow Subway for how it works.

Which airport am I flying into? Double-check your booking: "Glasgow" flights can mean either Glasgow Airport (GLA, no rail link, use the 500 bus) or Glasgow Prestwick (PIK, has its own station, used mainly by Ryanair). The transfer time and method differ significantly between the two.

Onward travel from Glasgow

Glasgow Central and Queen Street stations connect onward across Scotland and into England. For the classic short hop, see our guide to Edinburgh to Glasgow; heading north, see Glasgow to Aberdeen; and for the long-distance connection south, see London to Glasgow. If you're arriving from outside the UK, check the current UK entry requirements before you travel.

Practical tips for first-timers

Frequently asked questions

Does Glasgow Airport have a train station?

No — Glasgow Airport (GLA) has no direct rail link. The Glasgow Airport Express 500 bus is the main public transport option into the city centre, taking around 20–25 minutes to Buchanan Bus Station.

How do I get from Prestwick Airport to Glasgow?

Take the train directly from Prestwick Airport's own railway station, connected to the terminal by a short walkway, to Glasgow Central in around 45–50 minutes. Some airline tickets include this rail fare — check your booking before buying a separate ticket.

How much does a taxi cost from Glasgow Airport to the city centre?

Fares are metered and moderate for the roughly 15–25 minute journey, noticeably more than the bus but reasonable for groups or those with heavy luggage. Ride-hailing apps typically offer similar pricing.

Is Glasgow Airport the same as Prestwick Airport?

No, they are separate airports about 30 miles apart. Glasgow Airport (GLA) is closer to the city and served by the 500 bus; Prestwick (PIK), used mainly by budget airlines including Ryanair, is further south but has its own direct train service to Glasgow Central.
