Johannesburg airport to the city

O.R. Tambo by the Gautrain to Sandton.

O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) is southern Africa's busiest hub, located around 25 km east of central Johannesburg. Unlike many arrivals across the region, Johannesburg has a fast, modern rail link — the Gautrain — and using it is both the quickest and, for visitors, the safest way into the city.

The Gautrain runs directly from a station inside the airport to Sandton, Johannesburg's main business and hotel district, in around 15 minutes, with trains departing roughly every 12–20 minutes depending on the time of day (less frequent on weekends and public holidays). From Sandton, the line continues to Rosebank, Park Station in the city centre, and on towards Pretoria, making it a genuinely useful way to get around the wider region, not just from the airport.

Fares are inexpensive relative to a taxi and are paid using a rechargeable Gautrain card, available from vending machines and staffed counters at the airport station — you'll need one even for a single journey, as there's a small refundable card fee on top of the fare loaded onto it. The trains are modern, clean and well signposted in English, making this an easy system for first-time visitors to use.

Free feeder buses: Gautrain ticket holders can use the network's free feeder bus services from Sandton, Rosebank and other stations to reach specific neighbourhoods and office parks not directly on the rail line — useful if your hotel isn't within easy walking distance of a station.

Official airport shuttles

Pre-booked door-to-door shuttle services operate from the airport to hotels across Johannesburg and Pretoria, and are a sensible option if your accommodation is well away from a Gautrain station or if you're travelling with a group. These are typically booked in advance online or through your hotel, with fixed pricing and a driver waiting in arrivals.

Because the Gautrain's feeder buses don't cover every part of greater Johannesburg, a pre-booked shuttle is often the more practical choice for business travellers and conference attendees heading to venues in Rosebank, Rivonia or Pretoria that sit some distance from a station, even though the Gautrain itself remains the faster and cheaper option for the initial leg from the airport.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Metered taxis and app-based ride-hailing services (Uber and Bolt both operate at O.R. Tambo) are available from the arrivals area, with journey times to central Johannesburg or Sandton typically 30–45 minutes depending on traffic on the R24 and N1 highways, which can be heavily congested during peak hours. Ride-hailing apps offer a fixed, pre-agreed fare and a known driver, which most visitors find preferable to hailing an unmarked taxi.

A note on safety

Johannesburg has a reputation for higher levels of street crime than many other major cities, and this shapes practical transport choices for visitors more than in most destinations covered on this site. The Gautrain, official airport shuttles and app-based ride-hailing are all considered safe, well-used options by both residents and tourism authorities. What's generally discouraged is hailing an unmarked taxi on the street, walking with luggage outside secure areas, or arranging transport informally through unofficial touts in the arrivals hall. Sticking to the options above — rather than improvising — removes most of the practical risk.

The same caution applies once you're in the city: Sandton and Rosebank, both served directly by the Gautrain, are generally considered the most straightforward areas for visitors to base themselves, with hotels, restaurants and the Gautrain station all within a compact, well-used area. If your itinerary takes you into central Johannesburg itself, arranging transport in advance through your hotel or a known operator is the sensible approach rather than improvising once you arrive.

Arrival practicalities

O.R. Tambo's international arrivals area has currency exchange counters, ATMs and SIM card vendors before you reach the concourse, and picking up a local SIM is worth doing immediately, since data makes booking Uber or Bolt, and general navigation, considerably easier. The airport is well signposted in English throughout, and Gautrain and shuttle desks are clearly visible on the way out of the arrivals hall.

Which should you choose?

For most visitors heading to Sandton or central Johannesburg, the Gautrain is the fastest, cheapest and most straightforward option, and it avoids road traffic entirely. Choose a pre-booked shuttle if your hotel is off the rail network, and Uber or Bolt for door-to-door convenience with a known, trackable driver.
