Getting from Changi Airport to central Singapore is one of the most straightforward airport transfers in Asia. The city is compact, the transport infrastructure is excellent, and the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) connects directly to all major downtown areas in under 30 minutes. Whether you are heading to Orchard Road, the CBD or Marina Bay, you will rarely need to queue, and you will rarely get lost.
Changi Airport: a brief orientation
Changi has four main passenger terminals — Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 4 — plus Jewel, the spectacular mixed retail and garden complex between Terminals 1 and 2. Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are connected by the Skytrain, a free automated people mover, and all have direct access to the MRT. Terminal 4 is connected to Terminals 2 and 3 by a free shuttle bus. All terminals have clear English signage throughout.

MRT: the East-West Line into the city
The simplest and most popular way to travel from Changi into the city centre is by MRT. The East-West Line (EWL) has its eastern terminus at Changi Airport MRT station, directly beneath Terminals 2 and 3. From here, trains run west through the city, stopping at key interchanges including Tanah Merah (where you may need to change trains during off-peak hours), Paya Lebar, City Hall, Raffles Place and Tanjong Pagar.
The journey from Changi Airport to City Hall (heart of the colonial district and close to Marina Bay) takes roughly 28–30 minutes. To Raffles Place (CBD) it is a similar time. To Orchard (shopping belt and many hotels), you change at Tanjong Pagar or City Hall onto the North-South Line and the total journey is around 40 minutes.
MRT trains run from early morning until around midnight. Frequency during the day is every 3–6 minutes on the main line, so waiting time is rarely an issue. Fares from Changi to the city centre are low — among the most affordable for an airport rail link of this quality anywhere in the world.
Paying for the MRT
You can pay with an EZ-Link card (the Singapore equivalent of a transit IC card, available at the airport), a Nets FlashPay card, or major contactless bank cards and mobile wallets (including Visa and Mastercard paywave). If you plan to use public transport during your stay — and in Singapore, you should — picking up an EZ-Link card at Changi is worth the few minutes it takes.
Single-trip tickets are also available from machines at the station, though a small deposit applies and the EZ-Link card is usually more convenient.
City Shuttle: door-to-door to major hotels
The Changi Airport City Shuttle (sometimes listed as Airport Shuttle) is a shared coach service that drops passengers directly at around 20 major hotels in the Orchard Road, Marina Bay and CBD areas. It runs from all terminals throughout the day and into the evening.
Journey times are typically 30–45 minutes to most central hotels, but this varies with traffic and the number of stops before your drop-off. The shuttle is a sensible choice if your hotel is on the served list and you have bulky luggage — you avoid the stairs, lifts and walk that come with the MRT route, and the bus drops you at or very near the front door.
Fares for the City Shuttle are higher than the MRT but modest compared to a private taxi, and seats can be booked at the arrival hall counters or at the shuttle bays outside the baggage claim area.
Taxi from Changi Airport
Taxis from Changi are metered, well regulated and usually plentiful — Singapore's taxi fleet is large and the queues at the airport taxi stands move quickly, even late at night. The journey to the CBD or Orchard area takes roughly 20–30 minutes in normal traffic, though peak-hour congestion on the expressways can extend this.
Airport surcharges apply on top of the meter — a flat additional fee for journeys departing from Changi — and peak-period surcharges also apply during morning and evening rush hours and late at night. Despite the extras, the fare to central Singapore remains moderate by international standards for an airport taxi of this quality.
Rideshare apps (Grab is the dominant platform in Singapore) are also widely available. You can book a Grab from within the terminal; pick-up points are designated in the multi-storey carpark adjacent to arrivals. Grab fares are sometimes lower than the metered taxi rate outside peak periods, though surge pricing applies at busy times.
From Terminal 4
Terminal 4 is the newest and most remote terminal, used by a number of Southeast Asian carriers. It has no direct MRT connection: take the free shuttle bus to Terminal 2 or 3 (clearly signed in arrivals), then continue by MRT or taxi from there. Add around 10–15 minutes for the shuttle transfer. Taxis can also be taken directly from Terminal 4's own taxi bay.
Getting around Singapore after arriving
Singapore's MRT network is clean, frequent and covers most of the city well. The bus network fills in the gaps. For visitors staying a few days or more, the EZ-Link card is the easiest way to pay for every bus and train journey. Taxis and Grab are available throughout the city and fares are reasonable.
