Australia by train

The Ghan, the Indian Pacific and the east-coast lines.

Australia's rail network is shaped by the country's vast distances and sparse population: long-haul trains crossing the continent take days rather than hours, and the east-coast commuter corridors bear almost no resemblance to them. For travellers, the great transcontinental journeys are a destination in themselves — among the finest train experiences in the world — while the eastern network offers a practical backbone for short-to-medium hops.

Journey Beyond: the iconic long-distance trains

Journey Beyond Rail Expeditions (formerly Great Southern Rail) operates Australia's three legendary long-distance trains. These are explicitly travel experiences rather than rapid transport — the journeys are priced and marketed as such, and they deliver something genuinely extraordinary in return.

The Ghan: Adelaide to Darwin

The Ghan runs from Adelaide through the Red Centre to Darwin, covering roughly 2,980 km in approximately 54 hours (around 2.5 days). It operates once a week in each direction, with additional services in peak season. Named after the Afghan cameleers who helped open the interior, the Ghan passes through Alice Springs and Katherine, crossing the dramatically varied landscape of central Australia from the temperate south to the tropical Top End.

Accommodation classes include Platinum Service (private suites with private en-suite facilities and gourmet meals), Gold Service (private cabins for one or two with en-suite, meals included), and Red Service (reclining seat only, no sleeping accommodation — a budget option only for those who can sleep in a seat for 54 hours). The included Off Train Experiences — guided excursions in Alice Springs and Katherine — are part of the ticket price for Gold and Platinum.

Indian Pacific: Sydney to Perth

The Indian Pacific links the Pacific and Indian Oceans — Sydney to Perth via Adelaide and the Nullarbor Plain — covering roughly 4,352 km in approximately 65 hours (about 3.5 days). It runs twice weekly in each direction, though this can vary by season. The Nullarbor crossing is the defining experience: the longest straight stretch of railway in the world (over 470 km without a curve), across a flat limestone plain of almost hypnotic emptiness.

The same Gold and Platinum cabin classes apply as on The Ghan, with meals and Off Train Experiences included. Red Service seating is available for the budget-conscious. The train calls at Broken Hill, Adelaide, Cook (a ghost town, a surreal stop in the Nullarbor) and Kalgoorlie — all worth knowing about for the Off Train walks.

The Overland: Adelaide to Melbourne

The Overland is the shortest and most restrained of the three, running Adelaide to Melbourne in about 10–11 hours, twice a week in each direction. It is a day or overnight journey rather than a transcontinental expedition, with economy seats and premium seating available. A comfortable and scenic way to connect Victoria and South Australia without flying.

Booking Journey Beyond trains

All three Journey Beyond trains can be booked via the Journey Beyond website or through travel agents. Demand for Gold and Platinum class on The Ghan and Indian Pacific is high, particularly from April to October (the dry season for central and northern Australia), and cabin accommodation often sells out months in advance. Red Service has more availability but is rarely a comfortable choice for multi-day journeys. Booking at least three to six months ahead for the peak season is not excessive.

For travellers moving up and down the eastern seaboard without committing to a transcontinental, NSW TrainLink and the state rail operators offer a connected network.

Flying vs. rail on the east coast: Australia's east-coast routes are intensely competitive for budget airlines, and door-to-door flight times frequently undercut the train by several hours. The rail case on these routes is largely scenic and experiential rather than purely practical.

Rail passes for visitors

Journey Beyond offers multi-journey passes covering The Ghan, Indian Pacific and The Overland. These can represent good value if you plan to do more than one transcontinental journey. For the east-coast state operators, no unified rail pass covers the full network. Some individual state passes exist (Queensland Rail has a Discovery Pass) — check the current offer for your travel period.

Practical tips

Journey Beyond trains have their own dining cars and lounge cars, and Gold/Platinum passengers spend significant time in these communal spaces — they are genuinely social experiences. Pack for temperature variation: Australian nights in the desert get cold even in summer. The Red Centre leg of The Ghan and the Nullarbor Plain on the Indian Pacific both cross mobile signal dead zones for long stretches, so download what you need in advance.

State rail services in Queensland and NSW have different booking platforms. NSW TrainLink bookings go via the NSW TrainLink website. Queensland Rail uses its own platform. Cross-state journeys by rail require piecing together tickets from each operator.

Frequently asked questions

How long does The Ghan take from Adelaide to Darwin?

The scheduled journey is approximately 54 hours, departing Adelaide on Wednesday morning and arriving Darwin on Friday afternoon (southbound direction reverses these days). Off Train Experiences in Alice Springs and Katherine are built into the schedule.

Is the Indian Pacific worth the cost?

For travellers who value the experience of crossing a continent at ground level — and specifically the Nullarbor Plain — it is widely considered one of the world's great train journeys. As a rapid way to reach Perth from Sydney it is not: that takes 3.5 days. It is a journey in itself, not a means of rapid transport.

When is the best time to travel on The Ghan?

April to October (Australia's dry season) offers the most comfortable conditions in the Red Centre and Top End. The wet season (November–March) brings heat and tropical storms in Darwin. June–August is peak demand; book early.

Can I travel between Sydney and Melbourne by train in a day?

The daytime XPT service does run during daylight hours but takes about 11 hours — it is a full day's travel. The overnight service departs in the evening and arrives the following morning. Budget flights do the trip in about 90 minutes of air time, so this is a scenic choice rather than an efficient one.
