Loading live rates…
Rates are fetched live from a free public exchange-rate API the first time you load this page, using the US dollar as the base currency, then converted between whichever two currencies you choose. That means the figures reflect the current market mid-rate - not the rate a bank, card provider or airport bureau will actually give you. Real-world exchange transactions almost always include a margin on top of the mid-rate, plus sometimes a flat fee, so treat the number here as a benchmark to compare against, not the exact amount you will receive at the counter.
A few practical points worth knowing before you travel: card payments abroad typically use a rate close to the mid-rate with a small foreign transaction fee, which is usually cheaper than exchanging cash at an airport. Dynamic currency conversion - where a foreign terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency instead of the local one - is almost always worse value; choose to pay in the local currency when given the option. If you do need cash, exchanging a little before you go and the rest at a bank or ATM on arrival usually beats airport exchange desks, which tend to have the widest margins of all.
If the live rates fail to load - most often because you are offline - the page will tell you rather than showing a stale or misleading number.
Crossing between currency zones often means crossing a border too: see customs allowances explained for what you can carry duty-free, and the Schengen Area explained if you're travelling within Europe.
Live mid-market rates for planning purposes only. Banks, cards and exchange bureaux add their own margin and fees, so the amount you actually receive will differ - always check with your provider.
