Dubai International Airport (DXB) is one of the world's busiest, and getting from it into the heart of the city is simpler than many first-time visitors expect. The Metro Red Line runs directly from both main terminals to Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina and beyond — fast, air-conditioned and very affordable. Taxis are also plentiful, well regulated and cover the city around the clock.
Dubai International Airport: two terminals, one Metro line
DXB has three terminals. Terminal 1 handles most international carriers (including Emirates' older wide-body fleet on certain routes) and has its own metro station: Airport Terminal 1 (Metro), on the Red Line. Terminal 3 — the vast Emirates hub — has two adjacent stations: Airport Terminal 3 and Emirates, both on the Red Line. Terminal 2, which handles budget and regional carriers, does not have a direct Metro station; a short taxi or bus ride connects it to the system.
Metro Red Line: the quick route downtown
The Dubai Metro Red Line is the main rail artery of the city and its airport connection is genuinely excellent. From Terminal 3, the Metro runs west through the city, passing through GGICO, Deira City Centre, Union (interchange with the Green Line), BurJuman, Business Bay, Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall, and continuing to Dubai Marina and eventually Expo City.
Key journey times from Terminal 3
- Union Station (Deira, interchange with Green Line): approximately 15–20 minutes
- Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall (Downtown Dubai): approximately 25–30 minutes Dubai Marina Mall: approximately 45–50 minutes
- Expo City / Al Maktoum area: approximately 60 minutes and beyond
Trains run roughly every 3–7 minutes during peak hours and every 7–10 minutes at quieter times. Services run from around 5:30 am on weekdays and later at weekends, closing around midnight Sunday to Wednesday, and later on Thursdays and Fridays (the weekend in the UAE). If your flight lands very late at night, check whether the Metro is still running.
The Metro is not 24 hours, so late-night arrivals will need a taxi.
Fares and the Nol card
Dubai Metro fares are calculated by zone and are low by international standards. The journey from the airport to Downtown Dubai is comfortably within the affordable range. Fares are paid with a Nol card — a rechargeable smart card that works on Metro, bus and water bus. Cards are available at machines in the Metro stations at the airport and at Metro station ticket offices throughout the city.
Single-trip paper tickets are also available but cost more per journey than the Nol card. If you will use public transport at all during your stay, the Nol Silver or Gold card is worth buying on arrival.
The Metro has Gold Class carriages (at the front of each train) with slightly more space and seating, and a Women and Children's carriage at the rear of each train. All other carriages are mixed. The Gold carriage requires a Gold Nol card or a higher-value fare.
Taxi from Dubai Airport
Dubai's taxis are metered, well maintained and readily available at all terminals around the clock. The fleet is operated by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and is generally clean, air-conditioned and reliable. Drivers typically speak basic English.
Fares from DXB to central Dubai depend on destination and time of day:
- To Deira (the area immediately north of the creek): short journey, low fare, typically under 10 minutes outside peak hours.
- To Downtown Dubai (Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall area): typically 20–30 minutes, moderate fare.
- To Dubai Marina / JBR: 35–50 minutes in normal traffic, higher fare.
- To Palm Jumeirah or areas further south and west: 45–60 minutes or more.
A booking fee and airport surcharge apply at the start of metered taxi journeys from DXB — this is standard across all RTA taxis and is declared on the meter. Traffic on the Sheikh Zayed Road corridor can be heavy during morning and evening rush hours, which adds significantly to journey time and fare.
Rideshare apps, including Careem (a regional service owned by Uber) and Uber itself, are also widely available in Dubai and offer fixed-price quotes before you book. Pick-up zones at DXB are signposted in the arrivals area.
Terminal 2: the budget terminal
Terminal 2 at DXB handles a number of regional and low-cost carriers including flydubai. It sits separately from Terminals 1 and 3 and does not have a Metro station directly below it. From Terminal 2, your realistic options are:
- Taxi or rideshare: the most direct option. A short ride to the main terminal area or into the city.
- RTA Bus: bus routes connect Terminal 2 to the Metro network and to central Dubai. Journey times are longer but fares are very low.
Bus services from DXB
The RTA operates several bus routes from Dubai Airport terminals into the city. These are the cheapest surface option and serve areas not directly on the Metro line. Journey times are longer than the Metro due to traffic and stops, but the fares are very affordable. Routes and stops vary; the RTA Journey Planner app or website has current route information.
Dubai's second airport: Al Maktoum International (DWC)
Al Maktoum International (also called Dubai World Central or DWC) is the city's newer and far less busy airport, located near Expo City in the south of Dubai. Very few commercial flights currently operate from it, though this may change over time as the airport develops. If you do arrive there, the Metro Red Line extension reaches Expo City; taxis and buses are also available. Journey times into central Dubai from DWC are considerably longer than from DXB.
Practical tips for first-time visitors
- The Metro platforms at Terminals 1 and 3 are well signed within the arrivals areas — follow the Metro logo. At Terminal 3 you may need to walk a few minutes from the baggage hall to reach the station level.
- Dubai's climate is extremely hot outside air-conditioned spaces for much of the year. The Metro is fully air-conditioned and this alone can make the short walk to the station worthwhile.
- During the holy month of Ramadan, eating, drinking and smoking in public — including on the Metro — is prohibited. Be aware of this if you are travelling with food or drink from the airport.
- Dress modestly when in public spaces, including the Metro. Dubai is relatively relaxed compared to some Gulf cities, but covering shoulders and knees is advisable.

Frequently asked questions
How long does the Metro take from Dubai Airport Terminal 3 to Downtown Dubai?
From Terminal 3 Metro station to Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall station (Downtown Dubai) is approximately 25–30 minutes on the Red Line. The service is frequent and no changes are required.
Does the Dubai Metro run 24 hours from the airport?
No. The Metro closes around midnight on most nights, with slightly later service on Thursdays and Fridays (the UAE weekend). Late-night arrivals will need a taxi or rideshare.
Is a taxi from Dubai Airport expensive?
Compared to airport taxis in many Western cities, Dubai's metered taxis are reasonably priced. There is an airport surcharge added at the start of the journey. Fares to central destinations are moderate; journeys to the Marina or Palm Jumeirah cost more due to distance.
How do I get from Terminal 2 to the Metro at Dubai Airport?
Terminal 2 has no direct Metro station. The easiest options are a short taxi or Uber/Careem ride to a Metro-connected area, or an RTA bus route into the city.
