Barcelona and Seville are roughly 1,000 km apart at opposite ends of Spain, and the journey involves a choice between a fast but indirect high-speed train, affordable flights and budget coaches. Each option suits a different kind of traveller. Here is what you need to know to pick the right one.

By train: fast, but with a change in Madrid

There is no direct high-speed train from Barcelona to Seville. The journey combines two legs of the Renfe AVE network: Barcelona to Madrid (about 2h30–3 hours on the AVE), then Madrid to Seville (a further 2h30). With a connection at Madrid Atocha, the total journey time is typically 5h30–6h30 depending on the connection.

Trains on the Madrid–Seville leg are operated under the Renfe AVE brand, with the low-cost Avlo service also available on Barcelona–Madrid for budget-conscious travellers. Avlo fares start low but come with strict baggage allowances and no changes or refunds. AVE reservations are compulsory on both legs. Book both segments together on the Renfe website or app to ensure smooth connections; Renfe will typically offer combined tickets at a single price.

For rail pass holders, this route requires paid reservations on both high-speed segments. See our guide to Spain's AVE high-speed network for more on booking strategy and pass reservations.

The budget rail option: Avlo

Avlo — Renfe's low-cost arm, comparable to Ouigo in France — runs on the Barcelona–Madrid segment and offers some of the lowest rail fares in Spain. Advance seats are very cheap; the trade-off is no flexibility on changes or cancellations and a single small carry-on bag included in the base fare (larger luggage costs extra). For the Madrid–Seville leg, standard AVE or Renfe Avant services are the options; check what Avlo availability looks like before assuming the low-cost brand covers your whole route.

Flying: often the fastest door-to-door

The flight from Barcelona El Prat to Seville Airport takes around 1 hour 35 minutes. Unlike the Paris–Marseille or Brussels–Paris corridors, where the train wins easily on total time, the Barcelona–Seville air journey is genuinely competitive: the distance is long enough that the flight's speed advantage over a two-leg train trip is meaningful.

Several airlines operate this route, including Vueling (which is headquartered in Barcelona and has strong frequency), Iberia Express and low-cost carriers. Seville Airport is about 10 km north-east of the city centre, with a metro connection that reaches the Prado de San Sebastián bus station in around 35 minutes. Barcelona El Prat is similarly 30–40 minutes from the city by metro or Aerobus.

Factor in those airport transfers and the real door-to-door comparison with the train narrows, but on a full journey time of 5–6 hours including connections, flying still tends to win on total time unless you time the train legs well. The environmental trade-off is significant, however — the train produces a fraction of the carbon of a flight over this distance.

The long-distance coach: cheap and slow

Coaches, primarily ALSA (Spain's dominant long-distance bus operator), run Barcelona–Seville with a journey time of around 14–16 hours. This is a very long haul, but overnight services exist — departing in the evening and arriving the following morning — which can save on a night's accommodation. Fares are the lowest available for this route, making ALSA a genuine option for travellers on a very tight budget who want a sleeper-style experience without booking a hotel.

Driving: useful only with stops in mind

The drive from Barcelona to Seville is approximately 1,000 km, mostly via the AP-7 south to Valencia, then the A-4 or A-92 across Andalusia. Without significant stops, it takes around 9–10 hours — a full and tiring day. Spanish motorway tolls can add up on the Catalan section of the route (the AP-7), though toll-free alternatives exist and are usable with more time.

The main case for driving is stopping en route: Valencia, Murcia, Granada and the olive-grove landscapes of Jaén are all within reach. A road trip across Andalusia with a week to spare is very different from a direct point-to-point transfer, and the car begins to make sense in that context.

Which should you choose?

If time is the priority, flying is often the most efficient option for this long corridor, particularly with a cheap advance fare. If you prefer rail and want to experience Spain's impressive high-speed network, the two-leg AVE journey via Madrid is comfortable and competitive on price if booked ahead — and the Avlo option keeps fares low on the Barcelona–Madrid leg. Use the coach only if budget is the main constraint; a 15-hour overnight journey is a reasonable trade-off for some travellers. Drive only if the journey itself is the point.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct train from Barcelona to Seville?

No. There is no non-stop high-speed service. Travellers change trains at Madrid Atocha, combining the Barcelona–Madrid AVE or Avlo leg with the Madrid–Seville AVE. Total journey time is typically 5h30–6h30 with a good connection.

How much does the AVE from Barcelona to Seville cost?

Advance Avlo and AVE fares can be very competitive — sometimes comparable to a budget flight. Last-minute tickets on AVE cost considerably more. Booking both legs together on the Renfe website is the simplest approach.

Which airline flies Barcelona to Seville?

Vueling operates frequent services on this route. Iberia Express and occasionally other carriers also fly it. Seville is not served by as many carriers as Madrid, so availability can be narrower in peak season.

How long is the coach journey from Barcelona to Seville?
