Halong Bay — 1,600 limestone karsts rising from emerald water — is Vietnam's most iconic landscape and one of Southeast Asia's most visited destinations. There is no train to the bay, and the journey from Hanoi is almost always done by road: a shuttle bus or private limousine van on the expressway from the capital, typically taking 2 to 2.5 hours. Here is how to get there, what to book and what to expect.

There is no train to Halong Bay

This is the question most travellers ask first: Vietnam's national rail network does not serve Halong Bay. The closest rail connection is the line from Hanoi toward Hai Phong, but that runs in a different direction and does not get you to the bay. Road is the only practical option for the vast majority of visitors, and — thanks to the Hanoi–Hai Phong Expressway and the newer Ha Long–Hai Phong Expressway — it is a significantly faster and smoother journey than it used to be.

Most cruise and tour operators include return shuttle bus transfers from Hanoi as part of their cruise package, and this is how the great majority of visitors travel. If your cruise does not include a transfer, standalone shuttle buses and minivans run daily from Hanoi Old Quarter (often from near Hoan Kiem Lake or a specified pickup point) to Tuan Chau Marina or Hon Gai Harbour near Ha Long City.

The journey typically takes 2 to 2.5 hours in reasonable traffic conditions. Departures are usually morning, timed to connect with cruise embarkations. The buses are air-conditioned and standard for the route. Several tour operators and shuttle services operate this corridor — book through your cruise company or through established booking platforms.

Limousine van: more comfort, similar time

Shared or private limousine van services (usually 9-seater or 16-seater vehicles) offer the same route with more comfortable seating and often slightly quicker travel, as they make fewer stops than large coaches. These are popular with travellers who want a step up from the standard shuttle without renting a private car. Some operators offer door-to-door pickup from your Hanoi hotel.

Private car or taxi

Hiring a private car with driver gives maximum flexibility — you leave when you like and can stop along the way. Journey time is similar, around 2 to 2.5 hours in normal conditions, though the expressway can see slowdowns on public holidays and weekends. Apps such as Grab (Southeast Asia's dominant ride-hailing service) are also an option for booking a car, though the cost for a private vehicle over this distance will be higher than a shuttle or limousine van seat.

Traffic note: On long Vietnamese public holidays — particularly Tết (Lunar New Year), the April 30/May 1 holiday weekend and national day — the road between Hanoi and Ha Long City can be very congested. If travelling at these times, leave early in the morning and allow extra time.

By seaplane

Hai Au Aviation operates a scheduled seaplane service between Hanoi's Noi Bai Airport and Tuan Chau Island, landing directly on the water in the bay. The flight takes around 45 minutes and offers extraordinary aerial views of the karsts on approach. It is significantly more expensive than the road options and is an experience in itself rather than simply a transfer — popular for special occasions or with travellers short on time.

Which cruise and harbour to aim for

Ha Long Bay's departure points have shifted in recent years. Tuan Chau Marina, west of Ha Long City, is the main departure point for most overnight cruises, replacing the older Bai Chay harbour for larger vessels. Some operators still use Hon Gai Harbour. Your cruise confirmation will specify exactly where to go.

The bay itself is split between the more visited southern area (traditional Halong Bay) and the less crowded Bai Tu Long Bay further east, which some operators specialise in. Lan Ha Bay, to the south near Cat Ba Island, is another beautiful and less congested alternative reachable from Cat Ba rather than from the main Ha Long City harbours.

The cruise: what to expect

Almost all visitors experience Halong Bay on a boat cruise, ranging from budget day trips to two- or three-night stays on boutique junks. Overnight cruises — the most rewarding way to see the bay — include kayaking through caves, swimming, squid fishing at night and a visit to floating villages. The limestone caves (Dau Go, Sung Sot and Thien Cung are among the most visited) are spectacular but also popular; arriving late afternoon and staying the night means you see the bay in the quiet of the early morning, which is its own reward.

There is no shortage of operators and quality varies significantly. Read recent reviews carefully and favour established operators with clearly maintained vessels and safety equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a train from Hanoi to Halong Bay?

No. Vietnam's rail network does not reach Halong Bay. The only practical connections are by road (shuttle bus, van or private car, roughly 2–2.5 hours) or by seaplane from Noi Bai Airport.

How long does the bus from Hanoi to Halong Bay take?

Shuttle buses and limousine vans typically take 2 to 2.5 hours on the expressway in normal traffic conditions. Allow extra time during major Vietnamese public holidays when the road can be heavily congested.

Do I need to book my transfer separately from my cruise?

Most overnight cruise packages include shuttle transfers from Hanoi. Check your booking confirmation — if transfers are not included, standalone shuttle seats can be booked through the cruise operator or through booking platforms.

Which is better: Halong Bay or Lan Ha Bay?

Both are beautiful. Halong Bay is larger and more famous; Lan Ha Bay (accessed from Cat Ba Island) is quieter and less visited. Some travellers combine both via an extended cruise itinerary.
