Mui Ne, the beach and kitesurfing town famous for its red and white sand dunes, sits around 200 km north-east of Ho Chi Minh City along Vietnam's south-central coast. The classic way there has long been the sleeper bus, though a faster rail option to nearby Phan Thiet has changed the calculation in recent years. Here is how the options compare.
The classic way: the sleeper bus
Vietnam's sleeper buses (giΖ°α»ng nαΊ±m) β coaches fitted with two or three rows of reclining or fully flat bunks rather than seats β have run direct to Mui Ne for years and remain the most common way independent travellers make the trip. Operators including Phuong Trang (Futa Bus) and Sinh Tourist run several departures a day from Ho Chi Minh City's Pham Ngu Lao backpacker area and other pickup points, with journey times of around 4 to 5 hours.
Buses typically drop passengers directly along Mui Ne's main beach road, close to resorts, which is a genuine advantage over the train. Fares are inexpensive and the buses run frequently enough that same-day or next-day booking is usually straightforward outside major holidays. The ride itself is unremarkable β a coastal highway through Phan Thiet's outskirts β but the door-to-door convenience is the main draw.
The faster way: the train to Phan Thiet
Vietnam Railways runs trains from Ho Chi Minh City's Saigon station to Phan Thiet station, a newer, faster service that covers the distance in around 2.5 to 3 hours β noticeably quicker than the bus. The catch is that Phan Thiet station sits roughly 12 km outside Phan Thiet city and a further stretch from central Mui Ne, so you will need a taxi or pre-arranged transfer to complete the journey, which eats into the time saved on the train itself.
For travellers who prioritise a fast, comfortable ride and don't mind arranging a final transfer, the train is a good option and a pleasant change from the highway. Reservations are advisable a few days ahead, particularly at weekends, when the route is popular with domestic tourists heading to the coast.
Driving or hiring a car
The drive from Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne covers about 200 km, mostly on the coastal highway via Phan Thiet, and takes roughly 4 to 5 hours depending on traffic leaving the city β similar to the bus, though with the flexibility to stop. Hiring a car with a driver is a comfortable option for small groups and allows a stop at Ta Cu Mountain or the fishing village of Phan Thiet en route. Self-driving is possible with an international driving permit but is uncommon among short-stay visitors given local traffic conditions.
What to see: dunes, kitesurfing and the fishing village
- Red and White Sand Dunes: Mui Ne's signature sights, both a short drive from the main resort strip; the White Dunes are larger and often visited by jeep at sunrise to avoid the heat.
- Fairy Stream (Suoi Tien): a shallow stream walk through eroded red-sand canyons, popular for an easy morning walk.
- Kitesurfing and windsurfing: Mui Ne is one of Southeast Asia's best-known kitesurfing destinations, with reliable wind especially from November to April.
- Mui Ne fishing village: a working harbour where round bamboo coracle boats bring in the day's catch, best seen early morning.

Which should you choose?
The sleeper bus remains the easiest choice for most travellers, since it drops you directly on Mui Ne's beach road without a transfer. The train to Phan Thiet is faster in raw travel time and more comfortable, and is worth it if you don't mind organising a short taxi at the far end β or if you are continuing along the coast rather than staying only in Mui Ne. Driving suits those who want to stop along the way or plan onward travel by car.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne?
Around 4 to 5 hours by sleeper bus, with frequent departures from the Pham Ngu Lao area and drop-off directly along Mui Ne's beach road.
Is there a direct train to Mui Ne?
Not quite β the train runs to Phan Thiet station, about 2.5 to 3 hours from Ho Chi Minh City, but the station is roughly 12 km from central Mui Ne, so a taxi or transfer is needed to complete the trip.
What is the best time of year to visit Mui Ne?
November to April brings the most reliable wind for kitesurfing and generally drier weather; the wet season (roughly May to October) still sees plenty of sun but with more afternoon showers.
Do I need to book the sleeper bus in advance?
Booking a day or two ahead is sensible, especially at weekends and around Vietnamese holidays such as Tet, though outside peak periods same-day tickets are often available.
