Mexico City and Cancún sit at opposite ends of Mexico — about 1,700 kilometres apart — and the journey between them tells a story about the country's changing transport landscape. Flying is the quickest and most popular option, the new Tren Maya now offers a scenic overland alternative through the Yucatán, and the ADO bus will get you there if you have time and determination. Here is what you need to know about each.
The quickest way: flying
Most travellers fly, and for good reason. Direct flights between Mexico City Benito Juárez International (MEX) and Cancún International (CUN) take about 2 hours 15 minutes, and both Aeromexico and Volaris operate the route multiple times daily — making this one of the busiest domestic corridors in Latin America. Low-cost carriers including VivaAerobus also serve the route.
Fares range widely: book well ahead and budget airlines often offer competitive prices; leave it late and fares climb sharply. Allow time for Cancún's airport, which can get busy during peak tourist season, and factor in the transfer to your hotel — the Hotel Zone is about 20 kilometres from the terminal.
The airport in Mexico City is very large; allow at least 90 minutes before departure for check-in and security, particularly at Terminal 2.

The scenic overland route: the Tren Maya
Mexico's flagship infrastructure project, the Tren Maya, began phased operations in 2023 and connects a large arc of the Yucatán Peninsula. From Mexico City, the practical approach is to travel separately to the Tren Maya's western entry point at Palenque (reachable by overnight bus from Mexico City or by flying), then ride the train east through the jungle to Mérida and on to Cancún.
There is no single direct Tren Maya service from Mexico City to Cancún — the line does not reach Mexico City itself. The train runs through extraordinary scenery: ancient Mayan ruins, jungle, cenote country, and the colonial city of Mérida. For travellers who want to see the Yucatán properly, combining an overnight bus or flight to Palenque with a Tren Maya leg across to Cancún is a genuinely rewarding itinerary.
Tren Maya timetables and booking are managed by Fonatur/Tren Maya — check the official portal for current schedules and book ahead, especially over holidays. Note that while the line is largely operational, parts of the network were still being consolidated as of 2025, so confirm your specific leg before travelling.
It is worth noting that Mexico had no regular passenger rail service connecting the capital to the south-east for decades before this project; the Tren Maya is the first modern passenger rail in the region.
The budget option: ADO long-distance bus
ADO (Autobuses de Oriente) operates first-class and deluxe bus services across Mexico, and it is possible to travel from Mexico City to Cancún by coach — but this is a serious undertaking. Total journey time is typically 24 hours or more, often involving a change at Villahermosa or routing through the Yucatán. The buses are comfortable by any reasonable standard: reclining seats, air conditioning, on-board toilets and sometimes entertainment — but a full day and night on a bus is not for everyone.
ADO GL and ADO Platino services offer wider seats and more comfort at a premium. Fares are considerably lower than flying, and booking through ADO's website or at any major Central de Autobuses (long-distance bus terminal) is straightforward. The main terminal in Mexico City is TAPO (Terminal de Autobuses de Pasajeros de Oriente).

Which should you choose?
For most travellers, flying is the clear choice — fast, competitively priced if booked ahead, and the dominant way Mexicans themselves travel this route. If you want the journey to be part of the experience and have several days to spare, combining an ADO overnight bus or flight to Palenque with the Tren Maya across the Yucatán is a memorable alternative with genuine cultural depth. The ADO bus all the way suits only those on the tightest of budgets or travellers who genuinely enjoy long overland journeys.
Arriving in Cancún
Cancún's international airport handles tens of millions of passengers a year and has four terminals. The Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) is a narrow strip of barrier island about 20 km from the airport; taxis and authorised transfer shuttles run from the terminal at fixed rates. If you arrive by Tren Maya, the Cancún station is located in the city proper rather than the Hotel Zone, so plan onward transport accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a direct train from Mexico City to Cancún?

How long does the bus from Mexico City to Cancún take?
At least 24 hours on an ADO service, often longer depending on the routing. It is a genuine long-haul journey; comfortable, but demanding.
Which airlines fly Mexico City to Cancún?
Aeromexico, Volaris, VivaAerobus and Interjet (when operating) all serve the route. It is one of Mexico's busiest domestic corridors with multiple departures daily from each carrier.
Do I need to book the Tren Maya in advance?
Yes, especially during high season (December–January, Easter, summer holidays). Book via the official Tren Maya / Fonatur portal and confirm which stations your leg serves.
