The 250-kilometre journey between Montréal and Québec City runs along one of Canada's oldest transport corridors, following the St Lawrence River through the heart of French Canada. A comfortable VIA Rail train, a reliable intercity coach with Orléans Express and the scenic drive on Highway 20 or 40 all do the job — and none of them takes more than about three and a half hours on a normal day.

The most comfortable option: VIA Rail

VIA Rail Canada runs several trains daily between Montréal's Gare Centrale (Central Station, connected underground to the Bonaventure metro station) and Gare du Palais in Old Québec City, one of the most handsome stations in the country. Journey times on the Corridor route run at around 3 hours to 3 hours 20 minutes, with some services stopping at intermediate stations such as Drummondville.

VIA Rail's Corridor trains have Economy and Business class. Economy is perfectly comfortable — roomy seats, a café car and panoramic windows. Business class adds more legroom, an at-seat meal and a quiet car. Advance "Escape" fares in Economy can be surprisingly low; flexible and last-minute tickets cost considerably more.

No reservations are technically compulsory on this domestic Canadian route, but booking online in advance is strongly recommended, both to secure your preferred class and to take advantage of discounted fares before they sell out. The journey is pleasant — forests, rivers and small towns through the Laurentian lowlands — and both stations drop you in or near the historic centre, with no airport transfer needed.

Good to know: VIA Rail's timetable on this corridor is good but not as frequent as, say, a European high-speed route. Check the schedule in advance and note that Sunday morning services book up quickly, particularly in summer and around Québec's many festivals.

The budget option: Orléans Express

Orléans Express is the main intercity coach operator between Montréal and Québec City, running several departures daily. The journey takes around 3 to 3.5 hours — almost the same as the train — and fares are typically a little cheaper than VIA Rail economy, especially at short notice when train fares have climbed.

Coaches depart from Montréal's Bus Terminal (Gare d'autocars de Montréal, near Berri-UQAM metro) and arrive at Québec City's Bus Terminal, about a 15-minute walk from the Old City walls or a short bus ride. The coaches are modern, with Wi-Fi and charging points, and some services make stops at Drummondville and other towns.

Orléans Express is a solid choice — the standard is noticeably higher than basic long-distance coach elsewhere in Canada — and it is often the most flexible option for last-minute travel when the train is sold out or expensive.

Driving: the classic St Lawrence route

The drive from Montréal to Québec City is about 250–260 km and, in light traffic, takes around 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes. There are two main options: Autoroute 20 on the south bank of the St Lawrence, which is slightly faster, and Autoroute 40 on the north bank, which passes closer to several small towns and offers appealing glimpses of the river.

Neither highway has significant tolls. The drive is easy — dual carriageway almost the entire way — and straightforward in summer. In winter, conditions can change quickly: Québec winters are real, and the corridor between November and March sees significant snow and ice. Winter tyres are legally required in Québec during winter months, which affects hire car arrangements.

Driving makes most sense if you want a car in Québec City for day trips to the Beaupré Coast, Charlevoix or the Côte-de-Beaupré — or if you are travelling as a group. Parking in Old Québec is limited and can be expensive; use the park-and-ride lots below the cliff if you are based in the historic core.

Is there a flight?

Technically yes — some connecting flights exist — but flying between Montréal and Québec City makes very little practical sense for most travellers. The journey is too short to justify airport overhead, and neither city's airport is in the centre. Stick to ground transport on this corridor.

Which should you choose?

The VIA Rail train is the stand-out option for comfort and convenience: city-centre stations, a relaxed journey and good scenery. Orléans Express is excellent value and nearly as fast, especially if you need flexibility. Driving wins if you want freedom to explore the countryside or are travelling in a group — but allow for winter conditions if you are going between November and March.

Frequently asked questions

How long does VIA Rail take from Montréal to Québec City?

Around 3 hours on most services, occasionally up to 3 hours 20 minutes depending on the service and stops. VIA Rail's Gare du Palais station sits in the lower city, well placed for the historic quarter.

Is there a bus from Montréal to Québec City?

Yes. Orléans Express runs several coaches daily, taking around 3 to 3.5 hours. Fares are competitive, and last-minute tickets are usually available when trains are full.

Can I drive from Montréal to Québec City in winter?

Yes, but conditions can be challenging. Québec law requires winter tyres between 1 December and 15 March, so confirm your hire car is equipped. Give yourself extra time and check road conditions before departure.
