Nairobi to Kampala is one of East Africa's main overland corridors, stretching around 680 kilometres across the Kenya–Uganda border. A direct cross-border coach gets most travellers there overnight, a short flight covers the same distance in little over an hour, and self-drivers have a choice of two busy land crossings. There is no through passenger train service between the two capitals.

Long-distance bus is the default for most travellers on this route, both because it is affordable and because the services are reasonably well established. The two most frequently cited operators are Modern Coast Express and Mash Bus, both of which run scheduled daily services between Nairobi and Kampala.

Journey times are typically quoted at 12 to 14 hours in normal conditions, though this figure can stretch considerably — border queues at Busia or Malaba, traffic through Nairobi, roadworks and seasonal rains all add unpredictable time. Night buses are popular because they make use of sleeping time, but road conditions at night carry their own risks, and bus standards vary widely. Book directly with the operator or through a reputable agent; prices are modest by international standards.

Buses generally depart from Nairobi's main bus terminus area near the city centre, and arrival in Kampala is usually at a bus park in the city. Confirm the exact pick-up and drop-off points when you book, as they can shift.

For border formalities, most nationalities require a visa for both Kenya and Uganda — check the requirements for your passport carefully before you travel. East African Community member states (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi) offer a single combined tourist visa that can save money and time at the border if you are visiting multiple countries. See the Viamo visa guide for a general overview, and confirm current requirements with official sources and your own government's travel advice.

The fastest way: flying

Several airlines operate the Nairobi (NBO/Wilson) to Entebbe/Kampala (EBB) route, typically in about 1 hour 15 minutes of flight time. Entebbe International Airport is around 40 kilometres south of Kampala city centre, so you will need a taxi or shuttle into town after landing — factor in an hour or more for that transfer on a bad day.

Airlines serving the route have included Kenya Airways and regional carriers; check current availability as flight schedules and operators on East African regional routes change more frequently than on major international corridors. Flying makes sense if your time is tight or if you are uncomfortable with the road safety and overnight bus considerations. It costs more than the bus, but not dramatically so on advance fares.

It is worth noting that some travellers choose to fly into Wilson Airport for charter or bush flights, but scheduled commercial flights to Uganda use Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO) or sometimes Nairobi Wilson depending on the carrier — confirm which terminal when you book.

Driving and the border crossings

The two main Kenya–Uganda border crossings on this corridor are Busia (the northern option) and Malaba (the busier southern crossing, used heavily by freight). Both are legal and functional for private vehicles, though both can be slow — especially Malaba, which handles an enormous volume of lorry traffic and can back up for hours.

The road from Nairobi goes west through Nakuru and Kisumu, reaching the border before continuing through Jinja (where you can see the source of the Nile) and into Kampala. Total driving distance via Busia is around 680 km and a realistic drive time without long waits is 9 to 12 hours, though this assumes good road conditions and reasonable border processing times, neither of which is guaranteed.

If you are hiring a car, confirm with the rental company that the vehicle is permitted to cross the Kenya–Uganda border — not all rental agreements allow cross-border use, and insurance implications matter. You will also need the relevant vehicle documents at the border.

Is there a passenger train?

There is no regular through passenger train service between Nairobi and Kampala. The historic East African Railways network that once linked the two cities has not operated as a reliable passenger service for many years. Kenya's Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), operated by Madaraka Express, runs between Nairobi and Mombasa but does not extend to Uganda. Any future extension has been discussed politically but was not operational as of 2026.

Which should you choose?

If budget is the priority and you have time, the overnight coach with a well-regarded operator is the standard choice for backpackers and budget travellers, and it gets the journey done while you sleep. Flying is the right call if you are time-short, not comfortable with long overnight drives, or if fares are competitive when you check. Driving suits those with their own vehicle or a cross-border hire, particularly if you want to stop at Lake Nakuru, Kisumu or the Jinja rapids along the way.

Whichever you choose, build in buffer time — this is a route where delays at the border or in city traffic are the norm rather than the exception. Make sure your vaccinations and health documentation are in order before you travel, particularly for yellow fever if you are moving between East African countries.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the bus from Nairobi to Kampala take?

Scheduled journey times are typically 12 to 14 hours, but real-world times can be longer due to border queues, traffic, and road conditions. Night buses are common and popular.

Do I need a visa to cross into Uganda from Kenya?

Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Many travellers can obtain a Ugandan visa on arrival or online in advance; an East African Tourist Visa may cover multiple countries. Always check current requirements with the Ugandan Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration and your own government's travel advice well before travel.

Is there a train from Nairobi to Kampala?

No regular through passenger train service exists on this route. Kenya's Standard Gauge Railway runs to Mombasa, not Uganda, and no cross-border passenger rail service was operating as of 2026.

Which border crossing should I use when driving?

Both Busia and Malaba are used; Malaba sees the heaviest freight traffic and can be slower for that reason. Busia is often slightly faster for private vehicles, though conditions change — ask locally or check recent traveller reports before you arrive.
