Paris to Nice is one of the longest domestic journeys in mainland France — nearly 930 km to the Riviera — and the options are genuinely varied. The TGV takes about 5 hours 40 minutes, there is a classic overnight sleeper train, flights hover around 90 minutes in the air, and driving through Provence can be a pleasure in itself. Here is how each option stacks up, and how to choose.

The daytime train: TGV inOui in about 5h40

SNCF's TGV inOui runs from Paris Gare de Lyon to Nice-Ville in approximately 5 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours 50 minutes, with a handful of direct services daily. Some trains require a change at Marseille or Lyon; always check whether your service is direct. Nice-Ville station is in the heart of the city, a 10-minute walk from the Promenade des Anglais and 5 minutes from the old town.

Reservation is compulsory on all TGV inOui services. Advance fares on this popular leisure route can be competitive but sell out quickly, particularly for summer travel. Book as early as the SNCF booking window opens — typically up to about 3 months ahead — for the best prices. Rail pass holders need a paid seat reservation as well. See our TGV guide for full details on booking.

The journey south through Burgundy and the Rhône Valley, then along the Mediterranean coast from Marseille through Toulon, Cannes and Antibes, is genuinely beautiful — particularly the coastal stretch from Cannes to Nice.

Ouigo budget TGV

SNCF's Ouigo also runs to Nice at lower base fares than TGV inOui, with journey times broadly similar. On this longer route, the price saving with Ouigo can be substantial. Check the exact departure station in Paris: Ouigo services to Nice typically use Paris Gare de Lyon, but occasionally run from Paris Bercy — a smaller, less central station. Also note that Ouigo pays for any baggage beyond a small cabin bag, and the trains are more densely configured — on a nearly six-hour journey this matters more than on a short hop.

The overnight train: Intercités de Nuit

SNCF operates an overnight train (Intercités de Nuit / Nightjet) between Paris and Nice — one of the few surviving overnight rail services in France. The train typically departs Paris Gare d'Austerlitz in the late evening and arrives in Nice the following morning, with couchette (dormitory bunk-bed) and seated accommodation options. This is an excellent option for combining transport and accommodation into a single overnight, arriving in Nice rested and ready for a full day.

Fares vary by accommodation type — a couchette costs more than a seat but far less than a separate hotel night. Book ahead; this popular service fills up in summer. Some legs of the journey also offer a limited number of private sleeper cabins, which are pricier but significantly more comfortable. Check current SNCF schedules for exact times and availability.

Flying: genuinely competitive on time

Air France and several other carriers (easyJet, Transavia, Vueling) operate multiple flights daily between Paris — from both Orly (ORY) and Charles de Gaulle (CDG) — and Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE). Flight time is around 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes.

Nice Airport sits right on the edge of the city, about 6–7 km from the city centre, and is connected by the excellent Lignes d'Azur tram (Line 2) in around 30–40 minutes to the centre and the main station. Door-to-door from central Paris, realistically accounting for airport travel, check-in, security and the airport tram, a flight typically takes around 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours — a meaningful saving over the TGV for time-sensitive travellers.

Flying makes the most sense if you find a cheap fare, are travelling light, or are starting near one of the Paris airports. The train wins on comfort, luggage flexibility and the city-centre-to-city-centre advantage. Interestingly, Nice's compact airport-to-centre connection is better than many French regional airports, which slightly reduces the train's usual city-centre advantage.

Long-distance coach

FlixBus and BlaBlaBus connect Paris and Nice in around 10 to 12 hours, often overnight. Advance coach fares can be very cheap indeed — the lowest of any mode. An overnight coach arriving in Nice in the morning can also save a night's accommodation. The tradeoff is a long, uncomfortable journey with limited rest. See our FlixBus guide for what longer coach journeys involve in practice.

Driving

The motorway distance from Paris to Nice is roughly 930–950 km via the A6 and A8, the famous Autoroute du Soleil. The drive takes around 8 to 9 hours in clear conditions — with a recommended overnight break in Lyon or Aix-en-Provence — and French motorway tolls for the full distance are considerable. The A8 Riviera stretch between Aix and Nice can be extremely congested in July and August.

Driving is most worthwhile if you are making a proper road trip, stopping in Burgundy, the Luberon, the Gorges du Verdon or Provence, or if you want a car on the Riviera to explore the hinterland. For a simple Paris-to-Nice trip, the train or flight is far more sensible.

Which should you choose?

The TGV inOui is the most comfortable daytime option and offers the scenic coastal arrival that flying cannot match. The overnight train is a romantic and practical way to combine transport and sleep, arriving in Nice in the morning. Flying wins on total time if you are starting near a Paris airport. Ouigo offers the best daytime price-to-time tradeoff. Coaches suit overnight budget travellers. Driving is for road-trippers or those needing a car on the Riviera.
