Paris to Rennes is the gateway to Brittany, and since the opening of the upgraded high-speed line in 2017, the TGV covers the distance in under 1 hour 30 minutes — a genuinely remarkable improvement for a journey that previously took nearly two hours. Rennes is Brittany's dynamic capital, and with fast, frequent rail connections from Paris, it has never been more accessible for a weekend break or longer stay. Here is how the journey options compare.

The train: TGV inOui in under 1h30

SNCF's TGV inOui runs from Paris Montparnasse to Rennes in around 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes on the fastest services. The line from Montparnasse serves western France and is separate from the Gare de Lyon network, so make sure you arrive at the right Paris terminus. Services are frequent — often more than a dozen departures a day — with high frequency particularly on Fridays heading west and Sundays heading back to Paris.

Rennes station sits at the edge of the city centre, within easy reach of the medieval quarter and the city's modern Métro line. Paris Montparnasse, in the 14th/15th arrondissement, is served by Métro lines 4, 6, 12 and 13.

Reservation is compulsory on all TGV inOui services. Advance fares can be very competitive — book early for the best prices, particularly for popular Friday evening and Sunday services. Rail pass holders need a paid seat reservation as well. Our TGV guide covers how to book and what to watch for.

Ouigo budget TGV

SNCF's Ouigo brand also serves Paris–Rennes at lower base fares. Journey times are broadly similar to TGV inOui. Check the departure station: Ouigo trains on this corridor typically depart from Paris Montparnasse, which is convenient. As always with Ouigo, the lower fare comes with denser seating and a paid baggage allowance for anything larger than a small cabin bag. For a journey of under 90 minutes, this tradeoff is usually acceptable.

Long-distance coach

FlixBus and BlaBlaBus run coaches between Paris and Rennes in around 4 to 5 hours. Coach fares booked in advance can be very cheap, and for travellers on the tightest possible budget the saving over Ouigo might be meaningful. But the train is so fast on this route — the TGV is three times quicker — that the coach is a distant fallback rather than a serious first choice. See our FlixBus guide for what to expect on board.

Driving

The motorway distance is roughly 350 km via the A11 or A10/A11, with the drive taking approximately 3 hours to 3 hours 30 minutes in good conditions. French motorway tolls apply for most of the route. The A11 can be busy on summer Fridays and Sundays, particularly around Le Mans and the Rennes périphérique ring road.

Driving makes most sense if you are continuing beyond Rennes into Brittany — to Saint-Malo, Dinard, the Pink Granite Coast, Quimper or Brest — where having a car is a genuine advantage for exploring the peninsula. For a city-centre-to-city-centre trip, the TGV is nearly three times faster than the drive and vastly more relaxing.

From Rennes into Brittany

Rennes is a hub not just for tourists but for the Breton rail and bus network. From Rennes station, trains run west to Brest (2 hours 30 minutes), southwest to Quimper (2 hours 20 minutes) and north to Saint-Brieuc (45 minutes), from where connections onwards to the north Breton coast are available. For the walled city of Saint-Malo, a regional train runs from Rennes in about 55 minutes — making a Paris–Saint-Malo journey of under 2 hours 30 minutes entirely possible in a single day.

Which should you choose?

For almost every traveller, the TGV inOui — or Ouigo for the cheapest available seat — is the obvious choice. Under 90 minutes, frequent departures, and direct city-centre arrival in Rennes. Driving earns its place only if you want a car in Brittany for the wider region. Coaches suit only the absolute minimum-budget traveller with time to spare. What to see in Rennes

Rennes has an appealing dual character: a beautifully preserved medieval and 18th-century centre — the stunning half-timbered streets of the old town and the magnificent Palais du Parlement de Bretagne — alongside one of France's youngest and most vibrant student cities (Rennes has multiple universities and over 60,000 students). The Marché des Lices, held every Saturday in the Place des Lices, is one of the best food markets in western France. And the Breton cultural identity is strong: this is the heartland of Breton music, language and gastronomy.
