Jeju Island has no road or rail link to the Korean mainland — there is no bridge and no tunnel. To get from Seoul to Jeju you fly or you take a ferry, and for the vast majority of travellers, the flight wins on every practical measure. But the ferry is there for those who want it, and it tells you something about the journey that the plane does not.

The standard way: flying from Seoul

The Seoul–Jeju air route is, by most counts, the world's busiest, with hundreds of flights a day operated by Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Jeju Air, Jin Air, Air Busan, T'way Air and others. The flight takes around 55–65 minutes in the air, not counting time at the airport.

Two Seoul airports serve the route:

The destination is Jeju International Airport (CJU), which is in Jeju City, the island's main town, on the north coast.

Booking tips: Given the volume of flights, fares can be very competitive on this route — especially if you book a few weeks ahead and avoid school holidays and peak summer weekends. Jeju Air and Jin Air in particular offer low-cost fares. Korean ID holders can check in and board with their resident registration card; non-Korean travellers will need their passport.

Door-to-door: how long does it really take?

Allow comfortably 30 minutes to get to Gimpo from central Seoul, plus 1 hour before departure at the airport (domestic check-in is faster than international), plus the hour in the air, plus arrival formalities and transport from Jeju Airport to your destination. Total door-to-door from central Seoul to central Jeju City: around 3–3.5 hours on a smooth day. From Gangnam or further east, add transfer time accordingly.

The ferry from the mainland

There is no ferry from Seoul itself. The nearest ferry ports to Seoul that serve Jeju are:

Add the Seoul-to-port leg and you are looking at a total journey time of 8–12 hours or more compared with 3.5 hours door-to-door by plane. Ferries carry vehicles — if you want to take a car to Jeju, the ferry is the only way. Cabins and reclining seats are available for the longer crossings; the voyage across the Korea Strait can be rough in bad weather.

Operators and schedules should be confirmed closer to travel, as ferry services on this corridor can be adjusted seasonally. Advance booking is recommended in summer and during Korean public holidays.

Jeju is an island about 80 km off the southern tip of the Korean peninsula. Proposals for a fixed link have been discussed periodically, but none is under construction. For now, the island's relative isolation is part of its appeal — Jeju has a subtropical climate, a distinct dialect and culture, and a landscape dominated by the volcanic Hallasan, South Korea's highest peak.

Getting around Jeju

Once on the island, a rental car is the most practical way to get around. Jeju Airport has numerous rental car desks; book ahead in summer. Public buses cover the island's main routes but can be infrequent in rural areas. Taxis are available but expensive for longer journeys. The island is roughly 40 km across and most sights — the south coast cliffs, Seongsan Ilchulbong, Hallasan National Park, the lava tube caves — require some transport beyond Jeju City itself.

Which should you choose?

For virtually all travellers, the flight from Gimpo is the right answer: fast, cheap, frequent and connecting city centre to city centre via a short airport hop. The ferry is worth knowing about if you want to bring a vehicle to the island, are looking for a slow-travel sea crossing, or simply find a relevant departure from Mokpo or Wando that suits your itinerary. There is no meaningful advantage to taking the ferry purely for speed or cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a train or bus from Seoul to Jeju?

No. Jeju is an island with no fixed link to the mainland, so there is no train, bus or road connection. You fly or take a ferry from a southern mainland port.

How long does the flight take from Seoul to Jeju?

About 55–65 minutes in the air. Allow around 3–3.5 hours door-to-door from central Seoul, including getting to Gimpo Airport and travel from Jeju Airport at the other end.

Which airport in Seoul should I use for Jeju?

Gimpo (GMP) is much closer to central Seoul than Incheon and has the highest frequency of Jeju flights — it is the better choice for most domestic travellers.

Can I take my car to Jeju?

Yes, by ferry from Mokpo or Wando on the southern mainland coast. This adds many hours to the journey compared to flying; most visitors rent a car on the island rather than bring their own.
