Essaouira's windswept Atlantic ramparts are one of the most popular escapes from Marrakech's heat and intensity, and the journey between them is refreshingly simple: a single road west across the Chichaoua plain to the coast, covered comfortably in a morning by bus or car. There is no train on this route, but it barely matters โ this is one of Morocco's easiest journeys.
No rail option
Morocco's rail network, run by ONCF, does not reach Essaouira. The nearest station is Marrakech itself, so onward travel to the coast is by road only โ bus or car. This is a common pattern on Morocco's coastal detours; ONCF's lines largely connect the interior cities (Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, Fรจs) rather than the smaller Atlantic ports. See our Morocco by train guide for the full picture of where ONCF does and doesn't go.
The easiest way: the CTM or Supratours coach
CTM (Compagnie de Transports au Maroc) and Supratours (linked to ONCF and effectively the rail operator's coach arm for routes the trains don't reach) both run direct services between Marrakech and Essaouira several times a day, taking around 3 hours. Both are reliable, comfortable, air-conditioned options with assigned seating โ a considerable step up from shared taxis or informal transport, and the way most independent travellers make this trip.
CTM departs from its own terminal in Marrakech; Supratours has historically operated from a terminal near the Marrakech train station, reflecting its role as ONCF's road extension. Both arrive close to central Essaouira, an easy walk or short taxi ride from the medina. Book a day or so ahead in high season (spring and early autumn, when Essaouira's wind and lighter heat draw the most visitors), though seats are usually available with little notice outside peak periods.
Driving the coast road
The drive from Marrakech to Essaouira covers around 170โ190 km and takes about 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours, on a good, mostly single- or dual-carriageway road that crosses the flat Chichaoua plain before climbing gently through argan tree country as you approach the coast โ look out for the (genuinely common, not staged for tourists) sight of goats climbing argan trees along this stretch. Hire cars are easy to arrange in Marrakech, and the road itself is one of the most straightforward in the country for visitors reasonably comfortable with Moroccan driving conditions, with none of the mountain-pass demands of routes further south or east.
Fuel stations are well spaced along the route and the road is busy enough that breaking down or getting lost is rarely a serious concern, unlike some of Morocco's more remote drives. Many travellers use their own hire car for this leg specifically because they plan to continue exploring the coast north or south of Essaouira afterwards, where bus frequency drops off noticeably.
Driving makes the most sense if you want to stop along the way โ at argan oil cooperatives, or to detour slightly for photographs of the tree-climbing goats โ or if you plan to explore the coast north or south of Essaouira (towards Sidi Kaouki or up toward Safi) once you arrive, where public transport options thin out considerably.
Day trips from Marrakech
Because the journey is so short, Essaouira is a very popular day trip from Marrakech โ organised minibus tours run daily, typically departing early morning and returning in the evening, giving you four to six hours in the town itself. This works reasonably well given Essaouira's compact medina, but most visitors who fall for the town's slower pace, seafood grills and Atlantic light end up wishing they had stayed at least one night rather than rushing back on the same-day return.
Combining Essaouira with the rest of Morocco
Essaouira works well as a coastal counterpoint to a Morocco itinerary built mostly around inland cities. Many travellers pair it with Marrakech and a loop that also takes in Casablanca by ONCF train, or with a separate desert detour toward Merzouga and the Sahara โ the two make a natural contrast, swapping Atlantic wind and seafood for the dry heat and dunes of the pre-Saharan south. If your trip involves multiple long-distance coach legs across Morocco, our overview of coaches in Africa covers how CTM, Supratours and similar operators generally work across the continent.
Which should you choose?
For most travellers, the CTM or Supratours coach is the simplest, most comfortable and most affordable option โ reliable, direct and requiring no planning beyond buying a ticket. Choose to drive if you want to stop at argan cooperatives along the way or need a car once you reach the coast. A day-trip tour suits travellers with limited time in Morocco overall, though staying at least one night in Essaouira is worth prioritising if your schedule allows it.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a train from Marrakech to Essaouira?
No. ONCF's rail network does not reach Essaouira; the journey is by bus, car or shared taxi only, taking around 2.5 to 3 hours by road.
How long does the bus take from Marrakech to Essaouira?
Around 3 hours on the direct CTM or Supratours coach services, which run several times daily and arrive close to the Essaouira medina.
Is Essaouira worth an overnight stay or just a day trip?
Given how short the journey is, an overnight stay is well worth it if your schedule permits โ many visitors on a rushed day-trip tour wish they had stayed longer. The compact medina, seafood grills and Atlantic ramparts reward a slower pace.
Is the road from Marrakech to Essaouira safe to self-drive?
Yes, it is one of Morocco's easier routes for visitors โ a good, mostly straightforward road across flat plains and gentle hills, with normal Moroccan driving conditions and no notably difficult sections.
