Sentosa is close enough to central Singapore to feel like an extension of the city rather than a separate destination — a few minutes by monorail from the VivoCity shopping mall, or a scenic cable car ride if you'd rather arrive with a view. Here is how each option compares.

The standard way: Sentosa Express monorail

The Sentosa Express is a monorail running directly from VivoCity — itself easily reached by the Singapore MRT's HarbourFront station, on the North East and Circle lines — to three stops across Sentosa Island, taking around 5–10 minutes depending on your stop. It's by far the most straightforward way in for most visitors, running frequently throughout the day, and combines easily with a shopping or dining stop at VivoCity on the way in or out. A ticket covers the ride, and various Sentosa admission bundles include it, so check what your specific attraction ticket covers before buying a separate fare. An EZ-Link card covers both the MRT to HarbourFront and the Sentosa Express itself — see our EZ-Link card guide if you don't already have one.

The scenic alternative: the cable car

The Singapore Cable Car runs from Mount Faber and HarbourFront over the water to Sentosa, and is worth choosing specifically for the ride itself — sweeping views over the harbour and the city skyline — rather than purely as transport. It costs considerably more than the Sentosa Express and takes longer overall once you factor in getting to the Mount Faber or HarbourFront cable car stations, so treat it as an experience in its own right rather than the practical choice if you're simply trying to reach the island quickly.

The cable car has two separate lines — Mount Faber Line and Sentosa Line — with different starting points and ticket options. Check which line and station suits your route before buying, since starting from the wrong end can mean unnecessary backtracking.

Walking: the Sentosa Boardwalk

A pedestrian boardwalk connects VivoCity directly to Sentosa on foot, complete with travellator sections to speed up the walk, taking around 15 minutes at an easy pace. It's free, and a genuinely pleasant option in cooler weather or the early morning, though Singapore's heat and humidity make it a less appealing choice for most visitors in the middle of the day. It's also the only genuinely free way across if you're keeping costs down.

Buses onto the island

Public buses and the free Sentosa internal shuttle bus network connect VivoCity and other points into the island and around its various beaches and attractions once you're there. These are most useful once you've already arrived by monorail, cable car or on foot and want to get between Sentosa's spread-out attractions — Siloso Beach, Palawan Beach and the various resort areas are not all within easy walking distance of each other.

Driving and taxis

Sentosa is connected to the mainland by a causeway, and taxis, rideshare and private cars can drive directly onto the island, subject to a toll payable on entry. This is a practical option if you're carrying a lot of beach or day-trip gear, or heading to a specific resort hotel on the island rather than the general attractions area, though parking on Sentosa itself is limited and can be costly at peak times.

Sentosa entry fees and what's included

Sentosa charges a general island admission fee for most visitors arriving by the Sentosa Express, cable car or vehicle (walking via the boardwalk is typically exempt from the island entry charge, though individual attractions still charge separately). Major attractions such as Universal Studios Singapore, S.E.A. Aquarium and the various beach clubs each have their own separate ticketing on top of island entry, so budget for these individually rather than assuming one ticket covers everything. Combination passes bundling transport and attraction entry are often available and can work out cheaper if you're visiting more than one paid attraction in a day — see our guide to whether city tourist passes are worth it for how to judge this kind of bundle generally.

Which should you choose?

For most visitors, the Sentosa Express from VivoCity is the simplest and most efficient way onto the island — fast, air-conditioned and needing no advance planning. Choose the cable car if the ride itself, with its harbour and skyline views, is part of what you came for. The boardwalk suits a free, unhurried walk in cooler conditions, and driving or taxiing in makes sense if you're carrying a lot of gear or staying at a specific resort hotel.

Timing your visit

Sentosa gets busiest on weekends and Singapore public holidays, when both the Sentosa Express and the beaches see significantly more visitors than a weekday. Arriving earlier in the day generally means shorter queues for the monorail and popular attractions alike, and gives you more flexibility to move between the island's spread-out areas before the afternoon heat sets in.

Combining Sentosa with wider Singapore

Many visitors treat Sentosa as a single day trip bolted onto a wider Singapore stay, given how close and easy the connection is. If you're arriving into Singapore by air first, our Singapore airport to the city guide covers getting from Changi into town before you head back out to Sentosa, and the Singapore to Johor Bahru and Singapore to Bintan routes are worth a look if you're continuing your trip across the causeway into Malaysia or across the strait into Indonesia afterwards.
